NY -- Arthur A. Sboro, 79,
of 150 Elm St., and formerly of Cape Coral, Fla., died Thursday, December
23, 2004, at Samaritan Medical Center.
Born July 31, 1925, in Watertown, the son of Attilio
and Marie Anzalone Sboro, he graduated from Immaculate Heart Academy in
1942.
He entered the U.S. Navy Oct. 9, 1943, serving during WW II aboard Landing
Ship Tank 682, participating in the invasions of Normandy and Okinawa.
He married Johanna Rose Cavallario in June 1947 at
St. Anthony’s Church.
After his discharge from active service May, 11,
1946, Mr. Sboro returned to Watertown and joined the family business, The
Stone Jug, founded by his mother in 1933. Mrs. Sboro renamed the family
business Art’s Jug in honor of her son and his safe return from the war.
Mr. Sboro and his wife Johanna owned and operated
Art’s Jug restaurant from 1948 until 1988, when they retired and moved
to Cape Coral, Florida. His sons, daughter, and grandchildren continue the
family restaurant tradition with Art’s Jug, and Sboro’s Restaurant,
Watertown, Attilio’s, Clayton, The Stone Jug, Sackets Harbor, and
Foxy’s Restaurant, Fishers Landing.
Surviving besides his wife are a daughter and
son-in-law, Cynthia M. and Bruce Beattie, Clayton; two sons and
daughters-in-law, Arthur V. and Heather, Watertown and Steven and Liz,
North Carolina; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 2
sisters, Josephine Masiello, Watertown, and Marie LoVerde, Cape Coral,
Fla. Several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and a
daughter-in-law, Ellen G. Sboro, who died Feb. 5, 2000.
Mr. Sboro was a member of St. Anthony’s Church
Watertown and St. Andrew’s Church in Cape Coral, FL. A life member of
the Watertown Elks, the Italian American Civic Association, and the
Watertown American Legion Post 61. He was an avid golfer and a member of
Watertown Golf Club and Cape Coral Country Club.
He was a huge Yankee fan and enjoyed visiting the
family restaurants.
A prayer service will be 10 a.m. Monday, December 27
at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m.
at St. Anthony’s Church with Rev. Donald Robinson, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Calling hours will be 1 to 5 p.m.
Sunday, December 26 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be
made to St. Anthony’s Church.
